During the summer of 2019, Latshaw Drilling hosted 5 Petroleum Engineering interns from Texas A&M University and sent them out to drilling rigs in Central Oklahoma and West Texas to work as righands for the summer. I was really impressed with the zeal with which these young men took to their jobs working out in the summer heat and getting covered in oil while many of their friends were at the beach or otherwise enjoying themselves. When I conducted the interviews, I was surprised how many of them said they planned to take a year off after graduating to work as rig hands to help learn the industry a bit more.

What was even more impressive was how comfortable they were working on the rigs, while they were moving about freely, performing their tasks in sync with the rig crews, I was carefully recording my B-Roll while shielding my body behind the more stationary parts of the rig. I have to hand it to Latshaw’s Superintendents and Safety Experts who were keeping an eye on me and even asking me to back off a bit with my camera. I thankfully never got injured nor damaged any of my equipment during the time I spent filming on location.
