When I worked for Latshaw Drilling, a company in the oil field industry, one of my key responsibilities was producing the company newsletter. It was distributed to employees, customers, vendors, and especially the rig crews working out in the field. The focus was always on the people—highlighting the accomplishments of crews and individuals across the various rig sites.
To tell these stories, I conducted interviews—sometimes over the phone from my office, but often in person out at rig locations in the deserts of West Texas. It was a big shift from my previous experience in comfortable corporate offices. Out in the field, the conditions were tough—dust, heat, unpredictable weather—but what stood out most were the people.
